Description

This galaxy is a small companion of nearby M101. Its the same distance from us as M101, but only about 1/10 its diameter, which puts it at about 15,000 ly across. Its somewhere between an irregular and a spiral, being a classified as a "peculiar" dwarf spiral, which is tidally distorted by the much more massive M101. It rich in intensely blue O-B stellar associations and has only a single broad spiral arm (or maybe three nearly merged spiral arms, depending on your definition of an arm?) surrounded by a much fainter outer halo than has many more smaller and dimmer O-B stellar associations.

Being so nearby its much larger and more famous friend, it seems to be overlooked for the most part. This is too bad, as I think its quite an interesting object.

Each of the five 8 minute live-stacks that were combined to produce this image were themselves a stack of 130 three second exposures that were live-stacked in SharpCap.
