Description

The Medulla Nebula - CTB1. Initially discovered in 1955 by George Abell who mistakenly cataloged it as a planetary nebula giving it an alternate designation of Abell 85. It is actually an extremely faint shell expanding from a massive supernova toward Cassiopeia that occured around 10,000 years ago. It also glows strongly with x-ray emissions. Current hypothesis is that a very energetic pulsar was also created with the supernova explosion causing the x-rays and extremely faint glow of the surrounding material.
