I last imaged the field including galaxy cluster Abell 347 and edge-on barred spiral galaxy NGC 891 almost three years ago. Looking back at that image, I find it OK, but somewhat over-processed for my current tastes. I have switched cameras since then (from a Canon 1100D to a Nikon D5300), so I decided to give this field another go to see how new equipment and three more years of processing experience would change the final product.

NGC 891, located about 30 million light years away, is notable for the strong resemblance it bears to the Milky Way. Indeed, its luminosity and size are quite similar to those of our home galaxy. Much more distant than NGC 891 is the galaxy cluster Abell 347, which occupies the left two-thirds of my image. The members of this cluster lie between 218 million and 247 million light years away. Visible in my image are about two dozen members of this cluster, including 9 NGC galaxies and about 15 galaxies listed in the Principal Galaxies Catalogue (PGC). Most of these galaxies are about the same size as NGC 891, but, of course, appear smaller because they are are about 8 times more distant.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
