Description

This object, also known as NGC 6365, is a pair of spiral galaxies located 380 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +62 degrees. The upper bluish galaxy is edge-on and the lower yellowish galaxy is face-on. Each galaxy spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 100,000 light years.

This object was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of “Spiral galaxies with one heavy arm”. I can’t make sense of that classification, unless he thought that the upper galaxy was an arm of the lower galaxy. It looks a bit like that in his image, which is in black and white. One thing I have learned after repeatedly comparing my images to his, and which I didn't really appreciate before, is the value of color. Since many galaxies are distinctly blue or yellow, color can be very helpful in distinguishing different galaxies. Especially when they overlap each other and it appears confusing.

The upper galaxy looks a bit disturbed in the form of a slightly warped disk, but the bottom galaxy does not look disturbed to me. I don’t think that it is a given that these 2 galaxies are interacting. In fact, the lack of star streams makes me lean towards believing that the galaxies not interacting.

Arp objects are always interesting but this one is a bit too small and “normal” to be considered spectacular, in my opinion, especially since they are not obviously interacting.

I love the orange/blue double star just to the upper left of the object. It is not often that such a double star occurs in close proximity to a DSO, especially with such a large relative size compared to the DSO.
