Description

This face-on spiral galaxy, also known as UGC 1626, is located 260 million light years away in the constellation of Andromeda at a declination of +41 degrees.  It is a magnitude 14 galaxy which spans 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, corresponding to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

In his Arp catalog Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Small, High Surface Brightness Companions on Arms.

This is a beautiful barred grand design spiral galaxy.  The arms extend 360 degrees around the core and end in large plumes of millions of stars.

The “companion” below is ARP 074B.  No distance information is available for this galaxy.  It looks too bright and white to be a small dwarf galaxy.  My belief is that it is a superimposed distant galaxy.
