Description

Here is my first big astrophotography project : M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy. I learnt more from this single project than I did in the whole year. I am very pleased with this result.

Messier 101 is a gorgeous grand design spiral galaxy, located in Ursa Major lying at 22 million light-years away from us. This means that the photons I captured that night have been traveling in space for the last 22 million years to finally end up right in my telescope that was setup in my backyard for the night. This is absolutely incredible when you think about it.

I used a wide field refractor for this shot, so the galaxy looks pretty small. Don't be mistaken however, this galaxy is about twice the size of our own Milky way!
