Description

I don't remember how exactly I came across the existence of this nebula, but it's not in any of the commonly-used catalogs -- it's known as Cederblad 214, or LBN 581. The Cederblad catalog is a list of diffuse nebulae in the Milky Way and was published in 1946. Sven Cederblad created the catalog while investigating the distribution of nebulae in the galaxy. Ced 214 is located in the constellation Cepheus and lies about 2,900 lightyears away. One of the less-bright stars below and to the left of the little star cluster is BD+66 1673, which is one of the hottest stars in the solar neighborhood (within 1 kiloparsec of the Sun), burning at 45,000 K (80,540 F) and shining 100,000 times brighter than the Sun.

The red glow is due to energized hydrogen gas emitting light as it de-excites; it really does glow a deep red (656 nm wavelength). The area is suffused with light-absorbing molecular dust, and the stellar winds of stars within the nebula carve out intricate structures at around its core. There's a lot to explore in this lesser-known nebula!
