Description

This picture is a still frame from a 4K timelapse video of the full moon rising behind the Cape Byron Lighthouse, the most easterly location of mainland Australia.
A group of people gathered to witness the sunset, then moonrise and the magnificent view can be seen silhouetted against the base of the lighthouse.
For this shoot I was located 5.1km from the lighthouse.  I use Photopills, Google Earth and an aircraft-grade GPS to calculate the optimum shooting position which ideally needs to be accurate to within a couple of meters.

This photo recently won the overall News Corp Photo Editors award at the David Malin Awards for Astro Photography, as well as an honorable mention in the Nightscapes category.
