Description

First attempt at downloading and processing Hubble data. Combination of Hubble filters F502N (O III) Blue Channel, F657N (H-alpha+N II) Red Channel & F673N (S II) Green Channel.

Work Flow Summary

1. Visit https://hubblesite.org/resource-gallery/images and select the Hubble target you wish to work on. In the 'Fast Facts' section of the image page, take note of the 'Exposure Dates' and 'Filters' that were used to create the image.

2. Visit http://hst.esac.esa.int/ehst/#home and search for your target. Click the 'Show/Hide table columns' button top right and add filters to the search results. Scroll through the search results and download the files corresponding to the filters that went into making the image you chose. As the provided file names do not reference the filters used, rename the files to add the initials of the associated filter.

3. Extract the fits files contained in each of the downloaded files (I used 7zip) and open each in PixInsight.

4. Open the Dynamic Crop tool and select a crop area that removes stacking artifacts from the perimeter of the worst image and execute this crop on all images.

5. Use the LinearFit tool to equalize all filter images with each other. The images may need to be resized to make them exactly the same height and width. Use the Resample tool for this.

6. Combine the images with the PixelMath tool.

7. Stretch and edit the image as desired using STF, Histogram Transformation and Curves combined with masks.
