Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a disturbed spiral galaxy located 350 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +21 degrees.  It has a blue magnitude of 15.

The galaxy disk spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.  The star streams extend for 250,000 light years from top to bottom.

This object appears to be the result of a galaxy merger which is far enough along that only a single coalesced core is visible - no disk remains.  I love the star stream loops and the long extended star  stream downward.  Simulations of other galaxy mergers have recreated these star stream patterns.

I have included this object in my late stage galaxy merger collection, entitled Galaxy Merger Stage D – Coalesced Cores.  This object looks very similar to NGC 17.
