Description

I visited Atwater Park in Shorewood one of these mornings to grab a photo of Venus, Mars and Saturn and I'm glad I did. At first, like most of this week, it seemed that clouds would spoil the view through binoculars, but they stayed far enough out over the lake for me to observe an orangish hue of Mars, then take in Saturn and a tamed Venus through wispy clouds, via a pair of 10x25mm binoculars.

I took this snapshot while I was looking at about 4:30am - the sky is a little brighter than it was visually as this is at a 15s exposure, f4.5, 70mm, ISO 800. Venus is on the left, then Mars in the middle and Saturn off to the far right. Due to the funky angle of rotation I had, this kind of looks like we're looking off the edge of earth and in to space with the clouds over Lake Michigan below. I like it.

Despite how clear it might be inland, the weather of Lake Michigan makes planning a shot close to the horizon tricky. I'll be back tomorrow morning for another view. If I am lucky, I will also see Jupiter very low to the horizon, but nothing is guaranteed.
