Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a galaxy group located 250 million light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +21 degrees. The annotated mouseover image shows the confirmed members of this group, all at about the same distance.

The largest and brightest galaxy in the group is NGC 6577, located just to the right of the center of the image. This magnitude 15 elliptical galaxy spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years.

The 2nd largest galaxy of the group is NGC 6580, part of a trio of galaxies together on the left side of the image. This spiral galaxy has a more interesting structure, with visible arms and a halo of stars which encompasses itself and an adjacent elliptical companion (NGC 6579).

My favorite of the background galaxies is the grand design spiral galaxy seen halfway between the center of the image and the top of the image.
