Description

Abell 36 is a faint (magnitude 13) PN approx. 800-1400 LY distant in Virgo (various sources disagree on the distance). Its apparent diameter is about 6 arcmins, and its actual diameter is about 1.5 LY. Its very hot blue central star HIP 66732, which has a surface temp of about 76,000 K (our Sun 6,000 K) was probably once an unstable red giant star that threw off its outer layers to form this planetary nebula. The now much smaller star is evolving into a white dwarf.
