Description

This spiral galaxy is located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of +6 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, corresponding to a diameter of about 100,000 light years.  The mouseover shows a comparison to a mosaic of Hubble Space Telescope images.

We are viewing the disk of this galaxy about 30 degrees from face on.  The yellow central region is interesting – a bright oval region forming a faint bar, surrounding a much brighter small core.  The loose arms start from the ends of the bright oval and extend about 270 degrees around the core.

Star clusters and HII regions are visible throughout the disk.  This galaxy has been classified as a starburst galaxy.  Starburst galaxies are often associated with tidal interactions with other galaxies, and in fact a small nearby companion of this galaxy has been identified outside of the FOV of this image.
