Description

I reprocessed the data for Mars from May 19th 2018. The dataset was good but I felt I could do a better job with the data.

This image was acquired more than two months before closest approach and the planet had an apparent diameter of only 13.4 arc secs. It was also displaying a gibbous phase and was 90% illuminated. Syrtis major is on the 'f' limb and rotation into view. To its south the massive Hella Basin can be seen. It often has a distinctly yellow hue, which is a strong contrast against the blue-white of the south polar cap. The two peninsulas of Sinus Gomer can be seen protruding north from the dark albedo area of Mare Cimmerium. The area between this and Syrtis Major is Mare Tyrrhenium. The dark slash just north of Syrtis Major is Nodus Alcyonius and the "Pi" shaped feature to its right in the image is some of the albedo areas near Elysium Mons. The is tenuous clouds right around the equatorial region.

I will restore the original if you would care to make the comparison.
