Description

Purgathofer Weinberger 1 is a large (about 20 arc minutes in diameter) planetary nebula in the constellation of Lynx. It makes it one of the largest planetary nebula in the sky. It was discovered by Purgathofer and Weinberger on Palomar Deep Sky Survey prints in 1980.

PuWe 1 is quite difficult to image. Being of enormous size combined with its gaseous material being far away from the progenitor star, it glows very faintly. In Ha it has an estimated surface brightness of only 23.7 mag/arcsec2 and in Oiii only 26.3 mag/arcsec2.
