Description

NGC6744 is an intermediate spiral galaxy that lies roughly 30 million light years away from us in the southern constellation Pavo.  It is considered to be a superficially similar galaxy to our own Milky Way with a similar physical structure, although it is a bit larger.  It also has at least one distorted companion galaxy, visible in the lower right quadrant of the image, which is somewhat similar to our own Milky Way's Large Magellanic Cloud.

The galaxy's yellowish core is dominated by the light from old, cool stars. Beyond the core, spiral arms filled with young blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions are the more dominant colors.

This was a filler project that I started and then forgot about for a while.  By the time I got around to collecting Ha data, it was pretty low on the horizon and I struggled to get decent SNR.  Therefore, this image could really use some additional Ha integration time which I will add next season.

Although the image sports an impressive 35 hours of integration time, conditions were generally poor leading to low weighting for many of the subs that managed to made the cut.  Again, this target deserves more attention in a future season.

Thanks for stopping by.
