Description

The Crab Nebula was first observed by Chinese astronomes on the 4th of July 1054, during the Song dynasty. They called these novae, that were bright transitory phenomena, "guest stars". Its spectacular brightness lasted around  a year. Today it is also named SN1054, supernova remnant 1054 and it has a pulsar at its center.

It is surprising, but European astronomers did not report the apparition. They had a hard time observing this object and even Messier confused it the Halley comet. That's what motivated him in starting a catalogue of non-cometary objects. The Crab nebula is therefore M1, the first object of his catalogue.

A lot of work was involved in producing this image, clouds, bad weather and seeing did not cooperate. It is my longest project so far.
