Dark clouds of Cepheus

My end of season project featuring a vortex of dark nebula in Cepheus as well as a meteor passing nearby one of the carbon stars in the FOV.

A meteor passing near the star "S Cephei" or HD206362. A Mira-type variable carbon star which varies in magnitude from 6.6 to 12.5 within a period of 485 days, waiting to expell its outer layers and become a white dwarf.

In the upper left corner another Carbon star can be seen, "LEE 351", next to the more familiar dark nebula, LDN 1251. A dark molecular cloud 1000 ly from earth.

LDN 1235 is the other more familiar dark nebula in this image. A dark molecular cloud also containing two blue reflection nebulae, VDB149 & VDB150, which are being illuminated by nearby spectral type B8IV stars.

Yet another carbon star, named "LEE 338". In the upper left corner the galaxy "UGC 11861" can be spotted, a AGN candidate, which means that it is a possible source of high and ultra-high energy comsic rays.

LDN 1228 is another dusty molecular cloud, also fairly prominent in this FOV. It's located towards the left corner of the image, in the opposite corner lies LBN 552. There you can also spot a small orange reflection nebula. A young stellar object catalogued as 2MASS J20590373+7823088.

To the centre of the image, near the tail of LDN 1251, lies LDN 1241 & LBN 553

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
