Description

This object is located in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +51 degrees.  The dark nebula shares the image with several other objects, including a background of many stars and light undulating dust, in a rather confusing scene.

Barnard 20 is the darkest nebula, small and irregularly shaped, at image center.  It is about 8 arc-minutes in diameter.  The white center identifying Barnard 20 in the Astrobin mouseover is off center and much larger than it should be.

Just to the right of Barnard 20 is Sh2-211.  It is one of the furthest Sharpless objects, at 24,000 light years away.  A close-up of this lovely small nebula, taken with a longer focal length setup, is seen here:

Sh2-211

To the lower left is the larger nebula  Sh2-212.  The star cluster within is known as NGC 1624.  Both are located 20,000 light years away.  NGC 1624 is a magnitude 12.8 open star cluster. The cluster is about 3 arc-minutes in diameter, which translates to a diameter of 20 light years.  A close-up of this nebula and cluster, taken with a longer focal length setup, is seen here:
