Description

I acquired a bit more gear and was anxious to try it out on a quarter moon night. My wife and I drove about 30 minutes out to our usual class 5 bortle location. When we arrived, we found the site was overrun with a music festival. After about an hour of driving and striking out again, we found a dark location by a lake which closed at 10. We arrived on site a little past 9. A quick 10 minute setup, I was able to polar align to within 30 arc seconds and then spent about 5 minute finding the target, focusing and then setting up auto guiding. Overall tracking error was about 1.5 arcminutes. We climbed into the car and I was able to snap about 20 60s lights before my wife said it was time to go for fear of the gates locking. I pack up my gear and we head out. I was fortunate to find out the location was a class 4 bortle and the lights turned out really great. It’s about 30m from home and we will definitely be returning, though with DST in full gear I can realistically expect only about 90 minutes of lights.

Spent the morning capturing calibration frames and a quick stack and calibration in pixinsight and here we are.

I’m counting this as backyard since it’s only about 30 minutes away.
