Description

This disturbed elliptical galaxy is located 120 million light years away in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus (“The Southern Fish”) at a declination of -35 degrees.  It is a magnitude 13.3 galaxy which spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

Like many of the objects seen in my Astrobin Stage 4 Merger Collection (1 Core with Tails), this object appears to be far along in the merger process.  The single core has an extended galactic halo and several star stream extensions, one at 11 o’clock and one at 6 o’clock.

A recent 2021 paper stated that 3 different galaxy populations are seen in this object, suggesting multiple merger events.
