Description

The Crescent NebulaNGC 6888, is an emission nebula about 5,000 light-years away in Cygnus. It is formed by the fast stellar wind from the central star, WR 136, colliding with and energising the slower moving material ejected by the star when it became a red giant several hundred thousand years ago.

WR 136 (also known as HD 192163) is a Wolf-Rayet star estimated to be around 4.7 million years old. It is nearing the end of its life. Within a few hundred thousand years, it is expected to explode as a supernova. According to recent estimates, WR 136 is 600,000 times brighter than the Sun,  21 times more massive, and 5.1 times larger. All Wolf-Rayet stars are very hot. WR 136 has a surface temperature around 70,000K. WR 136 blew off a shell of material when it became a red giant around 120,000–240,000 years ago and this shell is still expanding at 80 km/s. As a Wolf-Rayet star, WR 136,  is now ejecting a fast stellar wind travelling at around 3.8 million mph. This stellar wind has caught up with, and is now colliding with, the slower moving material emitted earlier in the star's life. This collision is energising the original shell of material creating the nebula.

There is some evidence WR 136 may, in fact, be a binary star.

This picture contains 19hrs of data captured in Sii, Ha and Oiii. I tried several combinations but settled on a dynamic narrowband combination that shows the hydrogen and oxygen well.
