Description

This was a test of the AP Stowaway 92mm APO telescope and its .8X reducer using 30 second exposures to capture the Orion and Running Man nebulae.   Only 91 frames were accumulated before the targets went into the trees to the south.   I was surprised for these very short exposures, how much detail and nebulosity I was able to collect and was visible in the final image.  I don't think I realized how much additional light is available with the reducer, since I think more about broadening the field of view rather than increasing the light gathering rate.   This particular run was with the same image train, (using a ZWO ASI 6200MC cooled astro camera), that I was using to capture the C/2022 E3 (ZTF) comet.  The mount, however, for this sequence was the AP400 GTO.  I developed a small sky model with the APPM software in APCC Pro before imaging and captured several images toward the end of the sequence without guiding.  All worked well, even though a 30sec exposure is not much of a test for running the AP400 GTO unguided.

I used the PixInsight WBPP script to preprocess the lights and then used standard post processing routines to process the integrated (master) light.   My 'perimeter' style DBE approach (seen on the Visible Dark YouTube channel) proved very effective for this target.   I tried a new approach to modestly sharpen the luminosity features, though difficult to see a significant difference without extraordinary magnification.   (I did notice that the resultant colors were not as vibrant as I am accustomed to getting with a master rendered from an RGB filter work flow.)   Some additional adjustment to color and levels may come in a second version.

Again, I was pleasantly surprised by the extent and detail of the nebulosity that was revealed with just 45min of exposure.   It was fun to come back to one of my very first targets with a small (but high quality) scope and be rewarded beyond my expectations.  Magnifying the image helps you to see the extent of the nebulosity rendered.

Description: A version which is reduced in size and focuses on the features of the Orion and Running Man Nebulae. Removed some extraneous sharpening which leaves a more natural, yet still detailed, image. Still incredible for just 45 .5 min of exposure using a 92mm refractor (with a reducer) at an equivalent 488mm. Still recommend viewing in the expanded view to see the detail this little scope delivered.
