Description

On a warm July night in 1913, E. Barnard had the perfect opportunity....the world's largest refractor telescope, a perfect night of seeing and a bottle of strong whiskey at his side. He guided it to Orion and down to a section of space that was a dusty mess that no one had yet been able to get a close look at. On that night, he discovered one of the most recognisable space images that we know of today. Barnard had discovered the 'Horse and Flame Nebula"...of course, he also named it after himself too!

This amazing image was a challenging one for me to take. I had multiple attempts and the image you see is from imaging sessions from over 4 nights and three different locations (Freshwater - Sydney, Warrumbungle Ranges NSW and Ilford NSW). I have learnt a lot taking this image. Mostly about field rotation, image plate solve in NINA and a bucket of patience. I dedicate this shot to my middle daughter. It is a perfect image for her! Penny's flame burns bright and hard. She is a force to be reckoned with and being a horse zodiac, and horse obsessed, i couldn't think of a better shot to adorn her wall at home. I hope you love this beauty. I plan to do a mosaic of this and other objects in Orion's belt in the coming years....so we will meet again!
