Description

I initially wanted to image M78, but decided to wait for a better sky with no Moon, so I spent a little time on M36Messier 36, NGC 1960 - Pinwheel ClusterMessier 36 (NGC 1960) is the first of three bright open clusters in Auriga included in Messier's catalog (the other two are M 37 and M 38). In modern times, it has been nicknamed the "Pinwheel" cluster; this nickname is of uncertain origin.
All three clusters were first recorded by Giovanni Batista Hodierna before 1654; however these discoveries did not come to light until 1984. Le Gentil independently rediscovered M 36; Charles Messier included it in his catalog in 1764.Messier 36 has a total magnitude of 6.3, and contains about 60 proven members in a 12'-diameter area. In a small telescope, M 36 appears concentrated, but rather irregular in shape. Its brightest members are arranged in chains that give the cluster a crab-like appearance. This cluster contains ten 9th to 10th magnitude, twenty 11th to 12th magnitude, and ten 13th to 14th magnitude stars.M 36 is about 14 light-years in diameter, and about 4,100 light-years away - ten times the distance of the Pleiades. If M 36 were at the same distance as the Pleiades, it would outshine them; its true luminosity is about 8,000 Suns - nearly three times that of the Pleiades.M 36 is a rather young cluster, about 25 million years old; its brightest members are hot, blue B2 and B3 main sequence stars. Many of these bright stars are rapidly rotating, as shown by their broadened spectral lines. In contrast to its neighbors M 37 and M 38, it lacks red giants
