Description

The night I captured this image of this lovely little galaxy, the seeing was only ok, but the transparency was great. In fact, the transparency was so good from my backyard, that I didn't have to remove any gradient from the image, which is pretty unusual.

This galaxy has the brightness and symmetry of planetary nebula in our own galaxy, giving the impression of a colorful flower. The inner arms are bursting with blue O-B associations and red HII regions, quickly transitioning into a diffuse outer halo containing faint dust bands that extend out from the inner bright central regions of the galaxy. The central core is amazingly bright and stellar, from a no doubt busy black hole.

The galaxy is listed as being 39 million light years away and is roughly 2.4 arc minutes across. Its bright, at 10.8 magnitude, so the inner core should make a good target for visual observers, since its about the size of the ring nebula.

The total exposure is 32 minutes: four 8 minute live-stacks each of 240 two second subs with just an IR Cut filter.
