Description

Cassiopeia is a busy place! It's hard to frame any one thing up well without wanting to go in a different direction to catch something else. The three stars in this show are the M52 cluster, on the right, the bubble nebula in the middle, and the brain (or northern lagoon if that grosses you out) nebula on the right. We also have the large HII region, Sh 2-161, on the top and the lobster claw nebula poking up on the bottom. The bubble is my favorite here because of it's unique and relatively easy to capture smooth surface. I've included some crops to highlight the detail that may be lost on social media.

This is an HOO image. Two filters are used. One to isolate the hydrogen II emission wavelength, and one to isolate the oxygen III emission wavelength. As stars emit most wavelengths, they're always captured. Hydrogen is then mapped to the red channel, oxygen to the green and blue. This has the effect of a highly detailed narrowband image that reveals subtle nebulosity while maintaining a natural look.
