Description

The Hyades Cluster!

This was the "first light" image from my new Rokinon 135mm f/2 lens (although I shared the Orion widefield first). I took a quick stack of 16x1-minute frames while the camera was cooling. I don't typically image open clusters because I'm not great at processing them and they typically don't come out well for me, but the advantage of using a camera lens is that I can use the lens effects in my favor to make the main stars of interest more prominent.

The Hyades Cluster is the nearest star cluster to Earth, at only 153 lightyears distant, in the constellation Taurus, the bull. It's made up of a group of a few hundred stars that have similar ages, chemical composition, and motion, indicating they had a common birthplace. The stars' average age is 625 million years -- relatively young in star terms, although some of the brighter stars in the cluster are already evolving in giants.

The name Hyades originates from the five daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology, who are half-sisters of the Pleiades, for which another well-known cluster is named. Their brother, Hyas, died, and the weeping sisters were placed in the sky.
