Description

Flare from nearby 2.2m Algieba (Gamma 1 Leonis).

Arp noted that the companion to the large spiral NGC3227 was connected by a faint loop.  The companion (NGC3226) shows no real detail but does have a core that gets steadily brighter towards the center (becoming star-like) with a faint star nearby.  The halo around the galaxy fades gradually from the core and appears connected to the edge of one of the very faint arm extensions from NGC3227.  The spiral shows a mottled nucleus with no real evident spiral pattern.  In the center there is a bright core that is uniform and round.  Two small but fairly bright patches appear on the lower edge of the nucleus.  Faint wisps of arms seem to wrap half-way around and then flare out at right angles from the ends.  Very peculiar galaxies.
