Description

Here's the latest nova, Scorpii 2021. A nova occurs when a dwarf star siphons gas from its companion star. When this gas reaches a critical depth, gravity causes it to explosively fuse releasing a tremendous burst of energy. The Nova is center in this image. If you roll over the image, you'll see an annotated image with hash marks pointing out the Nova. This one is conspicuously red, so is easy to make out.

Sky and telescope have a nice writeup on this and two other recent novae at: https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/bouquet-of-novae/
