Description

Dumbbell Nebula (M27 / NGC 6853)
  • Type: Planetary Nebula
  • Distance: 1,360 light years from Earth
  • Size: 1.44 light years
  • Apparent size: 8.0 x 5.6 arc minutes
  • Apparent magnitude: 7.4
  • Age: 9,807 years
  • Constellation: Vulpecula

At the core of the nebula is the white dwarf remnant of a star like our sun that ran out of hydrogen and shed its outer layers. The nebula is still expanding.

This nebula gives us a glimpse of the eventual fate of the Sun, around five billion years from now. The white dwarf at the center is the largest known white dwarf. It is believed to have a much fainter, long-period variable companion star.
