Description

ABOUT THE IMAGE

The Boogeyman Nebula is a lesser shot dark nebula in the constellation of Orion. It is found right next to Barnard's Loop and can be very nicely combined with M78 (probably another underrated object in Orion!). This data was captured by several "Big Amateur Telescope" Members (BAT) last winter. In total we captured around 30hrs of data! Not bad, considering LDN1622 was just a side project for us. For deeper exposed group projects check our previous images of M82 and M81 .

This nebula is far closer to us than the more known, bright Orion Nebula! In fact, the Boogeyman Nebula is only about 500 lightyears away from earth, making the dust span about 20 lightyears in distance. Unlike many dark nebulas, the Boogeyman Nebula can actually also be captured from lightpolluted cities with help of narrowband filters. To get more defined structures and the reflection nebula (vdB 62) at the top, broadband imaging and dark skies are required. Since both formats can be combined, this made it a perfect target for a collaboration.

Thank you to all of those, who contributed on this project, to make this image possible!

ABOUT THE "BAT"

Please check the link below if you are interested in joining the BAT. We are always interested in new members and do monthly group projects encompassing wide-field targets, high resolution projects all the way to seasonal mega projects like Hubble's Variable Nebula and M81/82, as can be seen in our previous Astrobin posts. Membership is free and comes with no obligations other than being friendly and enthusiastic about astrophotography!
