Description

This Messier Object, also known as NGC 4258, is a Seyfert spiral galaxy located 25 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +47 degrees.  It is a magnitude 8.4 galaxy which spans 21 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a large diameter of 150,000 light years.

This galaxy is the 19th brightest galaxy in the sky.  It has a lot of interesting characteristics - a bright core, many dramatic dark and distinct dust lanes surrounding the core, bright arms of blue star clusters, several red HII regions, a fainter outer disk region, and several distant background galaxies.  The arm structure is hard for me to discern.
