Description

M16 (NGC 6611) discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745-6. Nebula IC 4703 discovered by Charles Messier in 1764.

At the limit between the constellation of the Serpent (tail) and that of the Shield, just 2º north of Sagittarius, very close to the galactic equator and being in a very rich area of the sky, the M16 is surely one of the most beautiful objects. In the center of the image, it is possible to see two clusters separated by 25 'aligned NNO-SSE, of which the northernmost is brighter and more compact. These swarms were originated by a nebula of gas and dust, the IC 4703, which now shines by emission, excited by the high energy light of its young, massive and hot stars. The designation of this object comes from the shape of an eagle in the center of the nebula. The image shows some Bok globules, zones of formation of new stars. The brightest stars in the central area of the image, from 8.1 to 9th magnitude, are all O / B type. In fact, in the central area of the image there is an abundance of supergiant and very luminous stars, which together can have a luminosity greater than 25 thousand suns, almost comparable to that of a small globular cluster, despite being only about 65 stars. Thus it is explained that the M16 has a magnitude of 6, despite being at an approximate distance of 7000 light years. The nebula's dimension is 70x55 light years.
