Description

I wanted to see how much detail could be picked up in the core of M101 with a 5" scope. M101 always looks dirty when I shoot it--a mess of undefined scragginess. I wanted to see what actually is in there! I think under pristine skies with no LP the results would be quite good. This is a tough target for a variety of reasons, low dynamic range across the disc is one of them. So I feel this is a pretty good example of what a 5" scope is capable of in poor skies. I don't think there is too much more to get out of this data, at least not with my processing skills. I do love the TOA 130--but I think I am feeling the inexorable pull of the 11". I think its time. I am building up my courage for some 2,800mm imaging. Galaxies, naturally, will be the primary targets, including M101. It will make for an interesting comparison. An interesting fact is the FOV depicted in this image is WAY closer in than even one taken at a focal length of 2,800 mm with this camera. Now that is quite a crop! I know there is some noise - I am trying to deal with it. Might be only so much I can do.
