Description

Thanks to the lovely, the talented @Eric Coles (coles44), I was made aware of the possibility of using continuum subtraction to reveal narrowband structures hidden in bright broadband areas. The extraordinarily talented @Bray Falls has long been a proponent of, and educator regarding, this technique. And thanks to the wonderful scripts Jürgen Terpe created, I'm able to actually perform this operation. The distinction here is that I used the full range of narrowband—Ha, S2, and O3—to create what I think is a compelling image of the maelstrom in the core of M31. I've posted it as a gif here to allow you to sit back, relax, and see it in the context of the broadband-dominated image we normally associate with the center of the Andromeda galaxy.

(Note that there's also some pretty nifty Ha-ness surrounding the core of M32 on the far left left edge of this image)
