Description

This image of the Horsehead Nebula was shot with only 1 hour of integration under Bortle 9 skies using a hydrogen alpha filter. The image also shows the majestic Flame Nebula in the lower left corner. This emission nebula is known to have a central cluster of young stars with protoplanetary disks (also known as "proplyds"). Nasa reported yesterday that a recent Hubble study of this nebula found four proplyds and four candidate proplyds, but that the proplyds are being worn away by the intense radiation of the nearby stars and may sadly may never form into planetary systems.
