Description

Don't think I have ever managed to see Bode's Nebula visually, not sure it would have looked like to Johann Elert Bode on new years eve 1774 , bit of a grey smudge probably

Pointed my trusty Orion Astrograph directly at it over three nights in the recent clear spell here in the UK + new moon . There is a good view of the northern sky from the patio so managed to get the following usable subs

580 Lume x 30 secs = 5 hrs 50 min
180 Red x 30 secs = 1 hr 20 min
228 Green x 30 secs = 1 hr 54 min
222 Blue x 30 secs = 1 hr 51 min
29 Ha x 300 secs = 2 hr 25 min
Total   = 12 hrs 20 min

This loads more (nearly 9.8666667 x more lol) than my last go at this target so was hoping for good things !

Had to throw out a lot of subs to what looked like really bad guiding , like the mount was jumping or something - PHD2 reported good guiding - finally realised it was the mirror that was moving slightly - dooooh - this will probably explain the terrible star shapes I have been getting in my longer exposures using this scope. Tightened things up for the Ha run on the third night and stars were ok.

When i came round to processing - eugh the gradients! (Bortle 7 /8 here) really terrible in the luminance , to the extent i not sure it wasn't the dreaded "donut of death" that happens when the mirror gets dew on it - anyway after hours of processing using a combination of my limited pixinsight skills and photoshop I manged to sort without damaging the galaxy too badly

Was pleased with the colour and merged the Ha quite subtly compared to what I have achieved in the past so that good

My newt is never as sharp as the refractors but relatively pleasing to look at so long as not pixel peeping

I present a fairly heavy crop as the main image, I will post the full field I got as a revision, there are a few tiny fuzzies in the back ground

I wonder if it would ever be possible to capture some of the IFN I seen in other pics given the light pollution I have got here .... maybe one for a future dark sky visit
