Description

SNR 82-2+5.3 is a supernova remnant (SNR)  in the constellation Cygnus. It is cataloged in the Green Catalogue of galactic supernova remnants as G82-2+5.3. D.A. Green of the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University cataloged 303 supernova remnants. It is also cataloged as W63 in the Westerhout Catalog of radio sources.

The SNR has optical emission only in the OIII emission line (blue and blue-white color). The dominant nebulosity shown here in Ha and SII is unrelated to the SNR; it lies some distance away from the SNR. The OIII SNR signal is very weak, with strong signal in the Ha and SII lines.

The SNR is thought to be greater than 5,000 LY from Earth, with a width of approximately 50 LY. It is estimated that the star explosion occurred around 15,000 years ago.
