Description

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is an ionised cloud of interstellar gas in the constellation of Cygnus. Located approximately 1,700 light years away with a diameter of about 100 light years , the nebula is overwhelmed by hydrogen (hence the red colour) which is ionised due to a nearby massive young star (with a temperature of more than 40,000 degrees celcius), and it is the nursery of new born stars in its vicinity. The name was derived from the amazingly similar shape of the North America continent.
