Description

My first attempt at Orion HDR. This may be the first object many amateurs shoot, but I'll wager it's one of the last most master the processing of. I'm not entirely happy with this one due to:

1. Residual satellite trails that I could not manage to integrate out

2. Blown out/blobbed up Trapezium

3. Difficulty masking both sky background and brightest parts of core in order to stretch midtones of the nebulosity

4. Halo artifacts on bright stars - again, a challenge to mask, as StarNet & even MMT would not recognize many of the brightest stars

I lost two whole nights worth of data due to shooting short exposures at zero gain on the ASI294MM (trying to resolve the Trapezium), with residual FPN that would simply not calibrate out.

Frustrating... but I'm going to be charitable with myself as it's my first attempt. I'll be keen to shoot this again next winter and compare progress, but I think for this season it's time to move on to other targets.

ASI294MM, Bin 1, Gain 108, Offset 30, -10deg

L: 42 x 60s; 239 x 15s

R: 14 x 90s; 39 x 30s

G: 17 x 90s; 41 x 30s

B: 17 x 90s; 43 x 30s

Description: Rainy day reprocess of these targets, omitting the HDR. About 2 hours of the original 4. Perhaps less visible dust, but also less "brown"; I prefer the colors and contrast of this version.
