Description

After a month of cloud in the Midlands, it is good to be out once again. I'm afraid I'm in experimentation or adventuring mode again... read on if you wish.

Bright summer skies are not conducive to lengthy integrations or projects, IMHO, but hats off to those who do. I am continuing to play with my new star tracker, this time with my ZS 80IIED semi-APO refractor and modified Meade finder-guider, weighing in at just under 4 kg, and at 545 mm and f 6.8 this places a much greater challenge on the tracking of this little mount.

Here I managed 4 minute exposures with just a little star elongation. Captured and pre-processed in Nebulosity, I've uploaded two versions, Revision A is finished in Startools v1.8 with a standard workflow - I tried not to over-saturate this, but to be honest the stars are a bit blown out with these exposures, 2x2 binning and gain 400 on my 183C hypercam. Revision B (mouseover) is pre-processed and finished in Nebulosity v4 using simple levels and curves, with star tightening, a little unsharp mask and noise reduction. I do like the stars more, and less saturation, but Startools goes deeper.

I'm happy with the detail in RGB, and I'm sure the stars could be improved with better balance and polar alignment. Much longer integration and use of narrowband filters would help expose the outer halo... once longer, darker nights return.
