Description

This animation shows a ton of activity with several quite large prominences. A few show tornado like swirling and the sharing of plasma gases. The animation spans from 13:02-13:42 UT (40 minutes) using 16 separate frames to create the animation. The seeing was good to fair.

For a more detailed explanation about the physics of the activity, I would like to hand that over to my dear friend Andrew Rosado, who is pursuing his PhD in Astro-Physics. He knows way more about the dynamics of what is going on and I hope you find his description interesting and educational. I know I will!

From Andrew:
Solar prominences; are arcade like structures, “arcade” denoting the sometimes parabolic nature of the solar prominence, with a filament like structure. Prominences, are supported by magnetic fields that insulate them from the surrounding hot coronal plasma. This changing density, due to cooling, affects the optical density resulting in a distinct structure. With adequate resolution and low atmospheric disturbance, as seen here, you can distinctly see the ionized plasma in this instance striating into fibrous filament. Specifically in this animation you can see the arcade following the magnetic field formed between the interactions of the surface chromosphere filaments and the separate magnetic field of the ionized plasma. If you observe the arc on the foreground, it’s strikingly similar to iron shavings warping around a magnetic field allowing you to imagine the magnetic interactions.
