Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a Seyfert galaxy located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +61 degrees.  It is a magnitude 15.5 galaxy.  t, Without the extended star streams, the object spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 80,000 light years.  Including the star streams expands that width to 250,000 light years.

The Hubble image comparison in the mouseover really helps to clarify what we are seeing here.  It looks to me like a Stage D Galaxy Merger, which I define as the final state where the cores have coalesced and long star stream tails extend out from the central merged core.  I especially like the visual contrast between the straight extended star stream and the star stream loop.

This object is the mirror image of UGC 8696.
