Description

Messier 109 is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. Not easy to photograph without disturbances by gamma UMa, proper name Phecda, except when using shorter or much longer focal lengths. At 2.54 mag (v), Phecda's intense bluish white light overwhelms the galaxy, whose apparent brightness is 9.8 mag (v), its surface brightness being only 13.5 mag/sq arc min.
