Description

When we look up the sky during the summer evening, we see a bright red star. This is Arcturus (also called α Boötis), in the constellation of Bootes, located about 37 lightyears away from us.

The star was named after Arkas (Arcas), the ancestor of the Arcadians; Arcturus means Guardian of the Bear.

In Indian astronomy, Arcturus is named as Svati (স্বাতী) and one of the Nakshatras of Vedic astrology.
