Description

Here is just under 3 hours on M51.  I had hoped to capture this with my 190mm Mak/Newt, but I was having focuser issues.  I only captured 3 hours as I moved on to another target once it was within imaging view.   Not too bad for a little 3" scope.  One thing nice about wide angle, there are lots of other galaxies visible.

M51 was discovered in Oct. 1773 by Charles Messier, described by him as a "very faint nebula, without stars."  M51 is comparable to our Milky Way Galaxy and has a major satellite galaxy (NGC 5195) that give the impression of being actually connected, but detailed photographs reveal dark dust lanes of the large spiral curve in front of the companion galaxy.
