Description

It is said "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" - and I couldn't resist the most used camera lens for Astroimaging - the mighty Samyang 135mm f2. An eleven element lens, with ED glass; this outperforms my old Pentax SLR 70-210mm lens in every respect - 62mm aperture, fast f2 optics, anti-reflective coatings, no violet aberrations and copious mounting options... perfect for my wide-field setup.

Herewith first light, on a very blustery and bright 'Boxing Day' morning, just 5 minute integration at f4. Manual focusing by sight only -  I struggled to get a tight focus at f2.8, and there were nasty halos at f2. I haven't optimized the backspacing - using a T2 adapter plate, with my Altair filter drawer and Hypercam 183C. This combination is severely under-sampled, and I used 2x drizzle in Siril to achieve a reasonable resolution of 4 "/pixel. Anyway, I'm perfectly happy with this first effort, and the aberration inspector does not show any major flaws. Once I figure out the correct spacing, I should be able to image at f2.8, even wide open at f2 with determination. I'm very impressed with the amount of signal through a Baader UHC-L booster filter (which I forgot to remove).

Samyang, according to 'Google', 'SAM' means - "three in one - heaven, earth and mankind", a fitting message for this Christmas time, and 'yang' means 'nutrition', pointing to the grocery roots of this technological empire. Anyway I'm pleased to be a member of this particular club, and look forward to extending my reach into the universe. Wishing you all a healthy and hopeful New Year, where we focus a bit more on this trinity.
