I still remember the first time I saw the night sky through a good pair of binoculars during a childhood sleepover at a friend’s house. Two hours later I was still scanning the Milky Way. And I’ll never forget seeing Saturn for the first time through my small Sears 6305 achromatic refractor. We’d just landed on the Moon and there was this tiny jewel-like planet with its rings. In 2015 I got an 8” Dob from a close friend and started doing visual astronomy...then moved up to a 12” goto Orion dob, and 150 mm APM ED binos. Fast forward to 2019 and watching Galactic Hunter, AstroBackyard, and Nico Carver’s Nebula Photos, Ed Ting and Dylan O’Donnell...I finally decided to try planetary AP and then DSO astrophotography. First planetary image was Mars during the 2019 opposition taken with the 12” Orion dob. For DSO I started using my existing IOptron 35 and a stock Canon T3i, with vintage Nikon telephoto. First DSO was Andromeda. I’m what you would call an “eager newbie”...and am totally hooked on AP. This plays nicely with my interest in stereo photography and AI/DNN image processing, deconvolution, and the like. So much to learn. So little time!
